Everything about Habar Gidir totally explained

The Habar Gedir is a Somali clan, part of the larger Hawiye group.
The Habar Gedir clan became very powerful in the middle of 1700, when the King of the Ajuran (Ajuuraan) controlled much of the coast of East Africa. The Habar Gidir leader, a Fiqi of Shiikhaal and the Imam of the Abgaal formed an alliance to fight the administration of King Ajuuraan. The clan has produced some great Somali figues such as, Abdullahi Issa the chairman of the Somali Youth League (SYL) and first Prime Minister of Somalia prior to independence and General Mohamed Farrah Aidid who ousted the dictatorial regime of Siad Barre. Under the leadership of Mohamed Farrah Aidid, during the Somali Civil War the clan became more powerful. Aidid opposed the United Nations presence in Somalia, and specifically Mogadishu. His forces are most famous for their participation in the Battle of Mogadishu on 3 October 1993 against the United States Army Special Forces.

Sub-clans of Habar Gedir

The Habar Gedir are divided into five main sub clans: Sacad, Saleebaan, Saruur Duduble and Cayr (or Ayr). They inhabit a wide area ranging from Gaalkacyo in Mudug, central Somalia, to Kismayo in southern Somalia.
